What is an instant tanner?

"Unveiling the Magic of Instant Tanners: Your Fast Track to a Gorgeous Glow"
Monday 23 Oct 2023

Understanding Instant Tanner

Instant tanners play an essential role for those who want to achieve a sun-kissed glow without sunbathing. In essence, these are unique formulations designed to color the skin, giving it an appearance as though you've just returned from a beach vacation. Typically, they provide a temporary tone change, which fades as the skin naturally exfoliates. It's an appealing option for those who want a tan without risking the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure.

Key Ingredients in Instant Tanners

The active ingredient in most instant tanners is a chemical called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA). DHA is a type of simple carbohydrate derived from plant sources such as sugar cane and by the fermentation of glycerin. Designed to react with the amino acids in the dead cells on the skin surface, it forms brown-colored compounds—giving the skin a tanned appearance.

Besides DHA, instant tanners can also contain other ingredients like skin-nourishing elements (like vitamins A, C, and E), antioxidants, moisturizers, and other plant extracts to give a softening and hydrating effect on the skin.

The Science Behind Instant Tanning

The science behind instant tanning is rooted in the Maillard reaction – a chemical process that occurs when sugars and amino acids combine under the right conditions. When an instant tanner is applied to the skin, the Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) it contains reacts with the dead skin cells' amino acids due to the protein keratin's presence. This reaction produces pigments called melanoidins, lending the skin a tanned hue.

Instant tanners do not stimulate melanin production; they introduce a color change at the skin's uppermost layer. The tanning effect typically appears within a few hours of application, depending on the brand's strength and type.

Application Techniques for Instant Tanners

Correct application is crucial to achieving a believable, streak-free tan with instant tanners. Before applying the tanner, skin should be clean, dry, and exfoliated, as this helps to remove dead skin cells that may cause the tan to streak or appear blotchy.

  • Start by applying the tanner in small patches
  • Blend thoroughly to avoid streaks and patches
  • Go easy on thick skin areas like elbows, knees and ankles as they absorb more product
  • Always wash hands immediately after use to prevent staining the palms

Await a few hours for the color to develop - do not shower or sweat excessively as this can cause streaking. To extend the tan's life, moisturize the skin regularly, which also promotes an even fade as the skin naturally exfoliates.

Maintaining Your Instant Tan

Proper aftercare is essential to extend the longevity of an instant tan. Avoid water and sweat for at least six hours post-application to allow the tan to develop fully. Continual hydration is key – moisturize the body thoroughly each day to maintain the color and promote an even fade.

Also, gentle daily exfoliation can prevent patchiness and keep the tan smooth. However, harsh scrubbing or bathing too frequently can strip away the tan. Maintenance plans will differ depending on individual skin types and tones, and the specific product applied.

Possible Risks of Using Instant Tanners

While instant tanners are generally safe for skin application, a few considerations should be kept in mind:

  • Some individuals may have skin sensitivity or allergic reactions to the ingredients, especially DHA. Always patch test before full application.
  • In rare circumstances, these products can cause breakouts or dry skin.
  • Instant tanners do not provide protection against the sun's UV radiation. Therefore, using SPF is still necessary even when tanned.

In case of any adverse reaction, it's recommended to discontinue the use and consult with a dermatologist.

Comparing Instant Tanners to Traditional Tanning Methods

Unlike conventional tanning methods that involve sun exposure or the use of tanning beds, both of which increase the risk of skin damage and skin cancer due to UV radiation, instant tanners offer a safer alternative. These products provide a tan-like appearance without exposing the skin to harmful UV rays.

The major benefit of instant tanners over conventional methods is control over the degree of tan achieved. They also allow for an instant result as opposed to the gradual tan achieved with sunbathing.
